Executive Summary

The South Carolina Special Forces Foundation “Green Beret Leadership and Team-building”© Course is an academic outreach program designed for middle and high schools and provides skills and competencies centering around critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, decision making, leading a team and being an effective team member.

The Green Beret Leadership and Team-building curriculum is a fast-paced program with specific hands-on exercises, activities and simulations to place each class member in a leadership position during the course. Hands on out-door exercises and activities involve the use of problem solving and decision making through the utilization of physics, mathematics, collaboration and vertical and horizontal thinking. Decisions are made by utilizing only the materials provided so that students will have to improvise while accomplishing each task. Time limits are imposed during the hands on activities to add a degree of both realism and urgency. In-class exercises revolve around a solid mixture of lecture, research projects, open communication between teachers/students/guest speakers for the purpose of immediate feedback on material presented and its understanding by each student. Group exercises and research projects will be conducted throughout the class requiring students to learn about American History and citizenship. Research projects center on all periods of American History from the pre-American Revolutionary War period through present day. This program is taken from the personal knowledge and experiences of Green Beret soldiers in both their military capacity and the experiences attained through a myriad of personal and professional education and interactions in business, education, research and development. The course centers on the basic leadership values, attitudes and interpersonal skills espoused in the U.S. Army Leadership Manual and the Pre-Selection methodology of the United States Army Special Forces (Green Berets).
